How to Apply for Bill Gates Scholarships
- 1). Visit the Gates Millennium Scholars website (see Resources). Click the "GMS Application" link.
- 2). Click the "Register or Login" link. Select the "Register Nominee" link to register a new scholarship applicant profile. During your registration, you will be assigned a username, password and registration identification number.
- 3). Complete the "Nominee" section of the website. You will be required to enter information such as your name, contact information, Social Security number, date of birth, race, intended college major, the university you plan to attend, household income, cumulative grade point average, attendance history, class rank and accomplishments.
- 4). Ask an educator who is familiar with your academic record to visit the GMS website and nominate you. Examples of individuals who can nominate you are your principal, teachers and guidance counselors. In order to nominate you, the educator must select the option to "Register Nominator/Recommender" instead of the option to register a nominee. He must then log in and complete the "Nominator" section of the website.
Be sure to provide the nominator with your registration identification number. It is needed to properly link his nomination to your scholarship application. - 5). Ask an individual who is familiar with your community involvement and leadership activities to visit the GMS website and recommend you as a scholarship recipient. The recommender cannot be a relative.
The recommender must follow the same registration instructions listed for the nominator in Step 4. The recommender must then complete the "Recommender" section of the website. She will need your registration identification number to complete the recommendation. - 6). Ensure that all parts of your application, including all nominations and recommendations, are completed by the application deadline. The deadline is generally around the first of the year, approximately Jan. 10h. However, check the website details for any changes to the deadline.
