    Prepare Wires

    • 1). Uncoil the No. 10 wire from the trailer's tongue to the electric motor that powers the brakes. Cut the wire by pinching inside the teeth of the wire cutters. Flag both ends of the wire with blue tape or a marker.

    • 2). Uncoil the No. 14 wire, and run three wires from the trailer tongue to the right and left trailer light assemblies. Flag both ends of each of three wires wires with the following colors: green, orange and brown on the right side; yellow, orange and brown on the right side.

    • 3). Locate the No. 10 notch on the wire strippers, and insert No. 10 wire into the notch about 1/2 inch from the end of the wire. Pinch the strippers around the wire, and spin them until you cut the plastic coating. Push the waste off the end of the wire. Repeat for the other end of the wire.

    • 4). Repeat Step 3 for both ends of all remaining wires, this time using the No. 14 notch on the wire strippers.

    Connect Wires to Sockets

    • 1). Loosen the two screws that hold the pin connector together by turning them counterclockwise with a screwdriver. Set the screws aside, then pinch the upper and lower halves of the connector in each hand and pull them apart to reveal the metal connectors.

    • 2). At the tongue, where the pin connector will go, insert No. 10 wire (trailer brake) into pin 2 (usually blue). Hold the wire in place with one hand. Tighten the screw inside the connector assembly by turning it clockwise.

    • 3). Insert the wire marked with yellow into pin 5 and the green wire into pin 6. Hold the wires in place, and tighten them as in Step 2.

    • 4). Insert the two wires marked with brown into pin 3 and the two orange wires into pin 7 (in the center). Hold the wires in place, and tighten them as in steps 2 and 3.

    • 5). Relocate to the rear of trailer, where the light assemblies are located. Insert the green wire into the right turn signal, the yellow into the left turn signal, the brown into both tail/running lights and the orange into the backup lights. Hold and tighten, as in steps 2, 3 and 4.

Ground the Socket and Reassemble the Plug

    • 1). Uncoil about 12 inches of No. 10 wire, and cut it with wire cutters. Strip both ends of the wire, as as in Step 3 of Section 1.

    • 2). Insert one end of the No. 10 wire into pin 1. Hold the wire in place, and tighten the screw as in Step 2 of Section 2.

    • 3). Locate a nearby screw or bolt on the trailer tongue, and loosen it with a screwdriver or adjustable wrench by turning it counterclockwise. Insert the loose end of the wire under the screw or bolt, and retighten it.

    • 4). Locate the lower half of the plug assembly, and align screw holes with the upper portion. Place a screw over one of the matched holes, and tighten it by turning the screwdriver clockwise. Repeat for the second screw.
