About Motorcycle Goggles
- The function of motorcycle goggles is literally to protect the rider's face and eyes from wind, weather, and debris such as dust and bugs that are encountered on the road. They are designed to be comfortable and provide much more safety than regular sunglasses or eyeglasses.
- Motorcycle goggles feature impact-resistant lenses that are intended to deflect items from entering the eye. They also feature a rubber seal that conforms to the rider's face for maximum protection and comfort. They are made of a lightweight plastic to be as comfortable as possible. Many also feature a headband which can be adjusted so they hug the rider's head to prevent slipping.
- Several types of motorcycle goggles are available to most accurately match the needs of each rider. Some have clear lenses for all-around use, and some have a gray or smoked lens to offer UV protection. Goggles can be purchased which have prescription lenses, as well, which eliminates the need for rider's to wear their regular glasses on the bike.
- Before purchasing goggles, consider how much you actually ride, and the quality of goggle needed. Do you live in a state that has helmet laws? If so, it is necessary to purchase goggles that are meant to be worn with a helmet. Other, larger goggles are meant to be standalone. Also consider the size you pick, because in order to be most effective they have to fit correctly.
- Some goggles may hamper the rider's vision with what are known as "blind spots." Before purchase, put the goggles on and look side to side without moving your head, paying close attention to how far you can see peripherally. Also, wearing gray or smoked lenses at night can be dangerous.
