Is that spider poisonous?
The Huntsman spider, native to Australia but showing up more and more often in the U.S., is a shy, non-aggressive spider with a non-toxic bite to humans, but it is credited with numerous deaths.
Why?
It's huge -- with its body reaching 1 inch long and its legs extending even further -- 3 to 5 inches long each. And it frequently hides out in cars -- behind sun visors or dashboards, then popping out unexpectedly.
If a person is driving when the spider makes its presence known, it can be the primary cause of an accident. In fact, in Australia, it is considered one of the 10 most dangerous spiders because of this.
Although still not found very often in the U.S., except in subtropic areas of southern states, it actually can pop up almost anywhere. In fact, it has been known to come into the United States in crates of bananas or other imported items.
Although much larger than the average American spider, it is not poisonous, and if it is found, it can be prevented and controlled with general spider control methods that are used for other spiders that are more commonly found in the U.S.
