How to Get a Bull Barrel Made

    • 1). Identify the rifle. This information will generally be stamped on the receiver or barrel and will include the manufacturer, model and caliber.

    • 2). Determine the desired caliber. The easiest option is to order a bull barrel of the same caliber as the original barrel. This will ensure that no additional gunsmithing beyond the barrel fitting will be necessary to accommodate the cartridges, but some people may wish to rechamber to a different caliber for personal reasons.

    • 3). Determine the twist rate for the new barrel by consulting a reference chart. Different calibers perform optimally with different barrel twist rates and selecting the proper twist rate is essential for accuracy. Twist rates are measured in complete turns in inches, such as "1 in 12 inches."

    • 4). Determine the barrel length. Shorter barrels are generally stiffer and vibrate less, but a minimum length is necessary to ensure the powder burns completely before the bullet leaves the barrel. This length will vary by caliber and cartridge load. Most barrel makers will be able to recommend a barrel length for your specific needs.

    • 5). Contact the barrel maker and give him the necessary information to place the barrel order.

    • 6). Have the barrel installed and fitted by a competent gunsmith. The barrel will need to be head-spaced and the stock will need to be reamed to accommodate the larger barrel.
