The Significance of Greek Civilization in World History
- Probably the most important contribution that the ancient Greeks made to modern society is the foundation and development of democracy. The Greeks, especially the Athenians, practiced a form of government that allowed individual citizens (albeit all male) to participate actively in government by partaking in administration, lawmaking and juries.
- Herodotus is a Greek author who is often regarded as the founder of modern historiography. His first work, "The History," provided the precedent for recording and preserving historical events, especially wars and cultures, for future generations.
- The ancient Greeks, especially the Athenians, are famous for their love and appreciate of literature, especially poems and plays. Their rules and habits for writing, reading and performing their poems and plays have contributed to the development of theater through to today.
