How to Fly for Cheap on Budget Airlines

    • 1). Before you buy your ticket, determine where your flight takes off and lands. Many budget airlines fly into airports that are far from popular cities. A flight can cost more and take more time because of long bus or train trips. Avoid overpaying, and look up these bus or train fares before you book your flight. Compare the full price of the flight (including bus or train fare) to the fare charged by regular airlines, using a travel comparison site such as Kayak. (See Resources.)

    • 2). If you're booking a budget airline flight on the Internet, read every page carefully before you buy your ticket. The airline may automatically add pricey extras--like travel insurance or quick boarding--that you don't want. You will have to deselect these items to avoid paying for them by accident.

    • 3). If you are planning to check your bags, prepay any checked-bag fees when you buy your ticket. Even if you have a carry-on bag, you may want to check it if you are carrying any liquids, because of strict security rules. Otherwise, you will end up throwing out the liquids at the security checkpoint or paying a higher checked-bag fee at the airport.

    • 4). Avoid high extra-luggage-weight fees. Budget airlines state their luggage weight limits on their websites; if you go over the limit, expect to pay a high price. Use a lighter bag, like a duffel bag or a soft-sided suitcase, when you pack. Weigh your bag before you leave home to make sure you're under the limit. While you're traveling, consider mailing souvenirs home instead of packing them in your luggage.

    • 5). Remember that you are on a no-frills flight. Budget airlines don't always offer in-flight snacks---at least not for free. Bring your own snacks to avoid having an empty belly or being forced to eat overpriced junk food. And don't expect a movie. Bring along an iPod, CD player, DVD player or a book.
