Queensland Workplace Health Safety Act

104 23

    Function

    • The act established standards for corporate responsibility and created the Workplace Health and Safety Board. The board acts as a liaison between industry and government. According to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, the administering body for the law, the board "provides advice and makes recommendations to the Attorney-General and Minister for Industrial Relations" about matters of workplace safety.

    Features

    • The act contains provisions for the appointment of safety inspectors, the establishment of standards for legal proceedings and the penalties for failing to follow the law. The law also requires the appointment of a Workplace Health and Safety Representative to be elected from among the workers.

    Considerations

    • The law outlines the responsibilities, or obligations, for all members of the workforce, not just employers. Obligations are outlined for everybody from the owner of the plant to suppliers of materials. The law even specifies that "designers of the structure continue to have obligations ... after the structure has been constructed."
