How to Check on My E-File
- 1). Open the program you used to e-file your taxes. Under "My Account" or "My E-file," choose "Check E-file Status."
- 2). Within moments, the program will state the status of your e-file: pending, rejected or accepted.
- 3). If the status says "rejected," go back to the "My E-file" option and choose "Fix Errors." If it's "pending," wait another 72 hours before checking the status once more.
- 4). If the e-file is approved, confirm within the program that nothing needs to be mailed. In certain circumstances, mailing supporting documentation to the Internal Revenue Service, along with a signature page if you did not e-sign the tax return, might be necessary. The program will list any supporting documents that will need to be sent if this is the case.
- 5). Note the amount owed or to be refunded. If you owe money to the IRS, update the program with your payment information and note the date of withdrawal. Or send a check to the listed IRS address along with your supporting documentation.
- 6). If the government owes you a refund, go to the IRS's refund status page (see References). Enter your Social Security number, filing status and the refund amount in dollars only. You'll get receive information on when to expect your tax return check or deposit.
