Playroom Storage & Organization

    Clean Out

    • To begin the task of organizing the playroom, go through all of the items in the room. Divide the items into three piles: donation, playroom storage and trash. Every item in the playroom should fit into one of the three piles. After all of the items in the room have been separated, remove the donation pile for a donation to a charity and take the trash pile to the dumpster.

    Group Items

    • With the remaining group of items, group all of the items according to what it is. All building blocks should be in one pile, stuffed animals in another pile and books in another pile. Continue grouping all like items together until everything is in its own pile.

    Create Closet Storage

    • If there is a closet in the room, add shelving and baskets to the closet. Store items that are not used on a daily basis in the closet. Small items should be placed in baskets whereas larger items can be stored on their own or on the floor of the closet. Be sure the heaviest items are on the bottom of the closet to prevent a child pulling a heavy object down on top of himself.

    Bookcases and Shelves

    • Add bookcases to the room that are anchored to the wall for safety purposes. Books can be stored on the bookcases as well as colorful baskets full of other toys. All toys should be grouped according to likeness in the baskets. Identify what is in each basket with words for older children and pictures for younger children. If toys need to be divided by child, consider assigning a color to each child and use that color baskets for their toy storage.

    Art Space

    • Add a table and chairs to the room for studying and art projects. Paper, markers and other art supplies should be within easy reach of the art area. Store all art supplies in bins that can easily be taken from the bookcase to the table and returned after the child is done with the project. As an added bonus, art projects can be framed and hung around the room for wall décor.

    Implement Rules

    • To keep the playroom organized, implement rules for the children that include putting up one set of toys before bringing out another set. Also implement a rule that if a new toy is purchased, the child must pick out another toy that will be donated to charity. This will prevent the room from becoming overcrowded and cluttered in the future.
