How to Stop Rust & Prevent It
- 1). Clean the surface. This will help you remove dirt and grime so that you can identify and target rust and potential rust problem spots. Use a damp rag and firm pressure to wipe down the metal surface.
- 2). Remove any existing rust with a paste of baking soda and lemon juice. Cover the rust stain with the paste, leave it on for 15 minutes and then use a cleaning rag to scrub it off. Repeat the process as often as necessary to remove the stain and keep in mind that the solution is safe on any surface.
- 3). Keep the metal dry by keeping it out of moist and humid areas like basements and away from areas with precipitation.
- 4). Use a preventative treatment to discourage rust. Rubbing down metal tools with mineral oil, or painting metal surfaces with rust-resistant paint can prevent rust and protect the metal from moisture. The mineral oil treatment should be repeated every week or so, while paint can last for years unless it becomes chipped.
