What Is Fluorouracil Cream Used For?

104 7
    • Fluorouracil cream is a chemotherapy drug that interferes with a cell's ability to divide by affecting its metabolism and damaging the RNA or DNA that tells the cell how to copy itself. Cancer cells that are unable to divide die. Fluorouracil cream is a topical treatment that is thinly applied to the affected area usually twice daily for weeks to months.

    Solar Keratoses

    • Fluorouracil cream is used to treat solar keratoses or actinic keratoses. These are red, scaly patches that develop on sun-exposed skin. They grow over time and can eventually turn into basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma could also be caused by genetics. Both of these skin conditions tend to affect adults with fair complexion who have had a lot of sun exposure.

    Psoriasis

    • Fluorouracil cream can also treat psoriasis. Psoriasis is a common, chronic skin condition where scaly rashes, that may or may not be itchy, appear throughout the body. Psoriasis is not contagious, though it is typically affected by environmental factors. It can also be passed down genetically.

    Viral and Genital Warts

    • Viral and genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus. These warts can be spread by direct contact and can spread to other parts of the body via scratching and then touching an unaffected area. Genital warts can occur in the vulva, vagina, cervix, urethra, penis, scrotum and anus. Fluorouracil cream can be used to treat both conditions.

    Disseminated Superficial Actinic Porokeratosis

    • Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) can be treated with Fluorouracil cream. DSAP is an inherited skin condition that results in dry patches on the arms and legs. The spots that can sometimes develop from this disease are sometimes confused with solar keratoses; the difference is that solar keratoses usually occur on the face and hands.
