DIY Rustic Trellis
- 1). Select four reasonably straight sticks and cut them to desired height. Collect them together tightly at the top. Keep a constant connection between the posts, being sure that the bottom ends form a square shape. Use elastic bands to secure the top ends together.
- 2). Apply a coat of glue where the posts meet at the top, wiping excess with a cloth. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
- 3). Drill and countersink a hole where each post touches another. This will prevent the wood from cracking and allow the screws to sit just below the surface of the wood. Screw the pieces together, being careful not to over-tighten.
- 4). Cut four sticks to use as braces, allowing 2 inches for overlap. Position the braces approximately 8 to 10 inches from the ground. Secure opposite braces to the vertical structure first. Use a clamp to hold one end of the brace while you drill and screw the other. Construct one or two more sets of braces further up the trellis, depending on need. These braces will provide stability and assist the plant in climbing structure.
- 5). Hide the screws and enhance the rustic appeal by wrapping the joints with twine. Apply a small amount of glue on the ends of the twine to keep it from fraying. Place the twine in a crack at the top of the trellis and wrap it until it thoroughly covers the screws. Cut twine and smooth over with glue to help it adhere.
- 6). Wrap the vertical joints with twine using a figure-eight pattern similar to lashing. Cover the screws with the twine and add glue.
- 7). Spray the trellis with three coats urethane, this will protect it from the elements.
