Behavior of African Greys
- African grey parrots are emotionally sensitive, and have strong personalities. They require lots of attention, and can be taught to speak and behave in an almost human manner. Many owners compare them to 5-year-old children.
- African greys require lots of space, toys and stimulation. The parrots need to live in areas where they can observe a lot of action, and be out of their cages for at least three hours every day.
- African greys are among the most intelligent of the parrots, and are the most talented mimics. They will happily interact with the people around them, but can become dissatisfied and restive. If they aren't entertained, they will grow bored and pull out their own feathers.
- Because of their outgoing personalities, African greys require socialization to maintain normal behavior. Socialization is best done with other birds and a wide variety of people. African greys that aren't socialized will become heavily attached to one person.
- African greys are very strong, and can bite and scratch if they're unhappy. Parrots that have been captured in the wild take time to adapt to people.
