How Does a Head Lice Mayonnaise Treatment Work?

We all look for easier safer ways to control head lice.
Reports that using many of the over the counter insecticide treatments are becoming less effective and some may even be hazardous to our health are really making us look more closely at possible alternatives.
Home remedies are very much "in fashion" at the moment and one that seems to keep popping up is the head lice mayonnaise treatment.
But does this method of lice control really work? Understanding head lice and how they behave are pretty much the keys to successful lice removal.
These annoying little insects just suddenly appear from nowhere and no matter how hard we try to get rid of them they just keep on coming back.
Once one child gets them at school, within days (or so it seems), half the school has got them.
They are not a dangerous insect but they are extremely annoying and no matter how you think about them they can make you feel dirty! You can't help the thought that you've let your family hygiene drop to uncaringly low levels.
Lice are not bothered if you are dirty or clean! They are a human parasite and their only need for survival is a warm host and constant supply of food.
The top of you head and your hair provide both of these, making you the perfect host! Lice are caught from anyone who already has these little pests by direct contact.
This is usually by head to head contact or sometimes from sharing items such as hats, headbands, scarves and personal headphones.
The usual tell-tale sign that lice are active on one of your children is seeing them constantly scratching at their scalp.
This annoying itchiness is caused by them biting you to feed and your skin reacting to their saliva.
This allergic reaction appears as small raised red itchy blotches on the surface of your scalp and if left to go un-checked for too long can become rather painful and could even become infected.
Correctly treating a head lice infestation is two fold.
You will need to destroy the live adult, but you must also make sure you remove the eggs that they leave behind.
The eggs (or "nits") are whitish in colour, about the size of a pinhead and they glue themselves firmly to the hair shaft making them quite difficult to shift.
Trying to comb them out with a normal comb is virtually useless! Killing head lice has been big business for the chemical companies worldwide for many years but there has been some evidence reported that through over-use of product such as pesticide shampoos and creams their effectiveness has been, shall we say "dumbed down".
In fact the National Pediculosis Association strongly advise against using anything containing an ingredient called "Lindane" due to the fact that is has been associated with a number of medical conditions.
The head lice mayonnaise treatment is a simple and natural way to kill lice and is something that you will most likely already have at home in one of your kitchen cupboards.
Mayonnaise works by blocking the airways of the lice and actively asphyxiating them.
For this treatment to work correctly you need to completely smother the infected persons hair and head in a good thick creamy mixture of mayonnaise.
Ideally you should cover the head with something similar to a plastic cap you would find at a hair dressers or a swimming cap and leave it on for at least 2 hours.
You need to then shampoo as much of the mayonnaise out as you can and then thoroughly comb through the hair with a dedicated metal toothed nit comb.
You should wipe the comb every time you pass the comb through the hair before combing again.
If you don't pay close attention to this process and miss any of the nits they will hatch in around 7 days and the infestation you thought you had gotten rid of will begin all over again! There are many different opinions on using home based remedies for treating lice but the long and the short of it is that you should use your own "informed" judgement as to what you believe.
Many parents report that some methods work better than others.
But I'm sure you are like me and would prefer to know just what it is you are putting on your child's head before you start using any potentially hazardous substances! A head lice mayonnaise treatment is something that is easily accessible and also easy to use.
And something you could try, safe in the knowledge that it is a completely natural product.
