How to Use a Plunge Router for Routing Edges

    • 1). Secure the section of wood to a table with the clamps. The edge that you are finishing should be comfortably accessible.

    • 2). Put on the safety glasses and dust mask to protect your body.

    • 3). Compress the plunge router by pushing down on the top. When it is fully compressed, lock it in place with the mechanism for this purpose. This is a tightening screw or compression latch.

    • 4). Attach the edge-bit by sliding it into the chuck and locking it into place. This is normally done by using an open ended wrench to tighten the chuck.

    • 5). Plug the router into an electrical outlet. Align yourself to make a clockwise movement along the edge of the wood.

    • 6). Start the router and guide it with your hands to the edge of the wood. Apply gentle pressure to the wood and move it along in a clockwise direction. Do not remove all the wood on the first pass.

    • 7). Continue making passes along the edge of the wood until the desired look is obtained.
