Beach Break - Destination Mombasa, Kenya

I've always found that the best way to unwind and relax for me has been a trip down to the coast of Mombasa.
There's nothing more satisfying than digging my toes into soft powdery white sand, soaking up the sun's rays while sipping on a cold "Dawa" cocktail under a palm tree, watching the turquoise-blue ocean's gentle waves and feeling the warm salty sea breeze against my face.
Mombasa has so much to offer, but if what you're really looking for is some R&R away from the crowds, the South Coast is it.
From award-winning five-star resorts to the more homely self-catered cottages which are fairly reasonably priced, the south coast has an option to suit your financial budget.
Both Air Kenya and now Safarilink Aviation fly direct to Diani's Ukunda airstrip from Nairobi which eliminates the cumbersome road trip from Moi International Airport across the ferry to the south coast.
The Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa is rated as one of the top hotels in the south coast and is located on a stretch of private beach area in Diani.
The Leopard Beach Resort and Spa, Southern Palms Hotel, Indian Ocean Beach Club and the Pinewood Beach Resort are other popular hotels situated on the strip.
But for me, the escape from these resorts leads me to the relatively isolated Tiwi Beach, just north of Diani Beach.
Endless stretches of wide, white sandy beaches and the lack of crowds makes this the ideal place for you to put your feet up.
This picture-perfect beach has great snorkelling opportunities at high tide, windsurfing, dolphin watching, shallow and deep-sea diving, swimming and beach ball games at sunset.
You'll probably find yourself gently swaying in a hammock, settling into the slow pace of life in gorgeous Tiwi.
Most accommodation along Tiwi's stretch of beach is in self-catering, fully equipped cottages such as Sand Island, Maweni and Capricho cottages, which are a great way to stay affordably.
You can hire a cook-cum-cleaner at an extra cost and in most cases, the fee is negotiable.
If you're in the South Coast and are looking for entertainment at night, the Forty Thieves night club is a great place to let your hair down and enjoy some good music.
What better way to party it up than on a beach under African skies! Adjacent to the club is the Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant which offers what is perhaps the most captivating dining experience in Kenya.
The restaurant is situated deep within a natural cave thought to be between 120,000 and 180,000 years old! If you're looking for other things to do while you're in the south coast, you may want to book a dolphin dhow safari excursion to Wasini Island which is famous for its dolphin spotting.
The Shimba Hills game reserve where you can walk in the wild with elephants, buffalo and the endangered Sable Antelope amongst many other animals is a must-visit! If travelling with a young family, some attractions that are worth a visit are Diani Snake and Crocodile Park near the Diani Shopping Centre, and the Diani Falconry, an amazing bird sanctuary located not far from the Ukunda township.
For those wishing to see Diani in a more mobile manner, there are several places from which to rent bicycles, perfect for the quiet picturesque roads that wind through this haven.
History lovers will not want to miss out on a visit to an ancient mosque located near the Indian Ocean Beach Club.
For the conservationist, a visit to the Colobus Trust is a must.
Take some time to get to know these amazing animals and learn what you too can do to help on-going protection efforts for these monkeys.
All in all, this place has something for everyone.
So the next time you're looking to take some time out from your hectic life, make it an unforgettable experience in the south coast of Mombasa!
