How to Build Deck Seating
- 1). Cut square post holes in the deck to hold the anchors for your deck benches. The holes should be positioned next to the joists of your deck. If your deck doesn't have joists, you will need to fit blocking underneath the deck for anchor support. Try to space the post holes no more than five feet apart, following the outer perimeter of your deck.
- 2). Place the square posts into the post holes. The posts should be a square width and extend between 14 and 18 inches above the deck surface. Use braces to hold the posts in place, and fasten each post to the deck joist next to it using a drill for maximum stability.
- 3). Create the deck seating frame by cutting wood to follow the desired shape of the seating. Usually the deck bench seating is formed in an "L" shape. Cut wood to create the outer perimeter of the bench that is parallel to the perimeter of your deck. Then place the "rungs" of the ladder perpendicular to the frame, making sure a rung is attached to each post. For corners place the rung diagonally so it touches both corners where the frame turns.
- 4). Lay surface decking on the seat frame to create a smooth, flat seating surface. Cut the decking to fit the frame and sand to ensure smooth edges. Secure the seat surface with nails.
- 5). Place cushions on top of the sitting surface, or keep bare and top with a sealant, depending on your desired deck look. You now have a place for guests to sit, relax and enjoy a great time in your backyard.
