Video Transcript
Hi, I¡¯m Angela Price of Eden Condensed, small space garden design. And, this is ¡°Garden Space.¡± Today, I¡¯m going to show you how to prevent frost from getting to your potted plants. Now, sometimes in the spring you may get a situation where you¡¯ve had several warm days, you think it¡¯s spring, you put in some lovely spring annuals, and the next thing you know, the weather calls for frost. Now, you¡¯ve spent a lot of money on your plants, and you don¡¯t want to, you know, have them die because of the frost if they¡¯re frost-tender. So, there¡¯s a couple things you can do to prevent frost. First thing you may want to do is to move the plants into an area that¡¯s either under a patio overhang, near the house, or put them in the garage if the frost is only going to last for a couple of days. And, it¡¯s not going to hurt the plants to be out of the sun for a couple of days. So, that way, the temperature will hopefully be above freezing, and you won¡¯t have to worry about either getting frost damage on your plants, or losing the plants altogether. Now, if that¡¯s not an option, the other option is to cover the plants and almost give them a little bit of a blanket in order to prevent frost from damaging your plants. And, there¡¯s a couple of things you can use. This is actually a frost bag, and this is a large one. So, if you have large potted plants or tall potted plants, you can put these over your plants. And, there¡¯s a little drawstring to cover the bottom part, and this will act as a blanket and as an insulator. You can also use a cloth grocery bag, which I think these come in handy. And, it¡¯s as simple as just covering your plant over like this. Also, you can use burlap if you have that, and just wrap burlap around your plants, and you can use a piece of string or rope and just tie them up at the bottom to keep the warmer air inside. And, that should be good for preventing your plants that are in pots from getting frost damage. The other thing you don¡¯t want to do is that if you know you¡¯re going to have a frost is, don¡¯t water your plants that day or the day before the frost hits. So, that way the water in the pot won¡¯t freeze. If you have any other questions about how to protect your potted plants from frost danger, please contact me at www.EdenCondensed.com.
