    New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Program

    • The New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Program is one opportunity available to young women hoping to break into this field. Geared toward high school seniors as well as undergraduate and graduate students, the program provides scholarships to residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Fifteen to 20 scholarships are awarded in amounts of $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000. To apply, students should complete an application form (available through the NYWICI's website), include a resume and compose an essay on a topic provided by the program. Application packages should also include two letters of recommendation and an official school transcript. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need, merit and a commitment to the communications field.

    Association for Women in Communications Local Scholarships

    • Another opportunity is through a local chapter of the Association for Women in Communications. While the national organization doesn't have an official scholarship program, many of its student and professional chapters do, including Seattle, FIU and San Antonio. Awards typically range between $500 and $2000. In order to be considered for one of the scholarship opportunities it is essential that students first identify if there is a WomCom chapter in their area by either going to the organization's website or calling the national headquarters.

    Public Relations Society of America Scholarships

    • For students interested in pursuing a career in public relations, the Public Relations Society of America offers a number of scholarships and grants. The PRSA's Foundation works with local chapters to help them manage and distribute their scholarship funds to worthy students hoping to enter the field. Awards range from the Multicultural Affairs Scholarship for minority public relations students to the Ron Culp Scholarship for students within mass communications. Awards are given on both a national and local basis in amounts ranging from $300 to $5000.

    Radio Television Digital News Association Scholarships

    • Through the Radio Television Digital News Association, there are a number of scholarships and awards of which students can take advantage and put toward their communications education. The Ed Bradley Scholarship and Carole Simpson Scholarship are both available through the RTDNA to deserving students pursuing a career in journalism or a related communications field. To be considered for one of the awards students must be a college sophomore or older and can be enrolled in any major as long as they intend to pursue a career in electronic journalism. Students must submit an application, a letter of reference from a dean or faculty sponsor and examples of their work (totaling no more than 15 minutes). Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000 as of 2011.
