Geno Smith named Jets starting quarterback
There will be no competition. Period. In Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's mind, he already knows who his starting quarterback will be when New York takes the field for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns.
"Right now, Geno (Smith) is the starter," Gailey said. "That's the way that it sits and that's the way we expect it to be. Unless something happens that you get an injury or something like that that you don't foresee, that's how we anticipate it going."
Speaking to the media for the first time since being appointed New York's new OC, Gailey stated that there would be no open competition during the team's organized team activities, minicamp or eventual training camp at quarterback. Smith's No. 1, while Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms, Jake Heaps and Bryce Petty compete for spots 2-through-5.
During the first two years of his NFL career, Smith has flashed the ability to be New York's quarterback of the future, but has rarely displayed it on a regular basis. Inconsistencies, turnovers and poor decisions have placed far more blemishes than bright spots on the former second-round pick's highlight tape.
In 30 games played, Smith has been intercepted 34 times and thrown just 25 touchdowns. He has a career completion percentage of 57.5 percent and a quarterback rating of 71.5. Just eight times Smith has gone a game interception-less and he's thrown multiple interceptions nine times.
But for all the bad Smith has displayed, there's also been the glimmers of good, such as last season's finale against the Miami Dolphins where he threw for 358 yards and three touchdowns.
It's that good that has led Gailey to forgo any potential QB battle.
"(Geno) has done good enough, quality things while he's been here," Gailey said. "And he's done quality things that he deserves the opportunity to be the guy. We told Fitz coming in that's the way it was going to be.
"We didn't try to pull the wool over somebody's eyes. That's exactly how we told (it to) him."
New York will take to the field for the third installment of this week's three-day voluntary OTA. There will be no media access for the practice.
