Instructions

1

Fly the flag of your chosen country however you wish if you are flying that flag alone. There are no laws concerning flying other flags alone in the United States.
2

Procure separate flagpoles if you are flying the flag alongside the American flag. In peacetime, these two flags should be flown on separate flagpoles. Fly the international flag always to the left of the U.S. flag, as per Chapter 7 of the Flag Code.
3

Fly both flags at the same height if you are flying the flag of another country alongside the U.S. flag. This is according to Section 7g of the Flag Code, which clarifies that "when flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace."
4

Make sure your flags are of approximately the same size, if you are flying two flags.
5

Illuminate your flags at night if you are flying the American flag alongside an international flag, as per Chapter 6a of the Flag Code, which states that a flag may be flown around the clock: "However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness."
