How to Paint After Removing Wall Paper
- 1). Examine the walls you want to paint after removing the wallpaper. Sand the walls down if the wallpaper left some rough spots or glue on the wall after removal. You may need to sand some areas where small spots of wallpaper wouldn't come off also.
- 2). Wash the walls with a mild solution of all-purpose cleaner and water mixed in a bucket if there is still some glue residue on the walls. Make sure the walls are dry before painting.
- 3). Add spackle to any small holes you may have in the wall. Take a small putty knife and dip it into the spackle paste. Wipe the spackle over the hole, then smooth over the hole with the edge of the knife. Allow the spackle to dry, then sand it down to be even with the wall. Once you paint over the spackle you won't be able to see any texture or color difference
- 4). Prime the walls with at least two coats before painting. Primer is going to seal any wallpaper glue that may not have been removed, keeping it from affecting the actual paint. Allow ample drying time for both coats.
- 5). Begin painting your fresh walls with your color choice. Put on enough coats to achieve full coverage and leave enough drying time in between coats.
