How to Become a Social Work CEU Provider
- 1). Gather the social work, psychology or marriage and family counseling license numbers of all potential CEU providers for your organization. Check the status of all professionals to ensure the licenses are current and active with no pending charges against the professionals.
- 2). Review the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) provider guide (see Resources) to make sure you or your organization is eligible to apply to be CEU providers. Contact the program director through the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) at ace@aswb.org if you have any questions about the requirements before you complete the application.
- 3). Follow the instructions on the ACE program application including dates of submission, number of copies to submit and required fees. Make sure you complete and submit your application at least 3 months before you hope to host a CEU program. Processing and application review can take time.
- 4). Check your state's requirements for CEU approval in addition to the ASWB application. At least three states (Kansas, Ohio and Florida) offer online applications for agencies desiring to become CEU providers. Because licensing is granted by states, different states also hold different CEU requirements for their social workers and those who provide the continuing education classes.
- 5). Contact your state's social work licensing board for more information about application requirements within your state. Follow the instructions on state applications and submit them in a timely fashion with the appropriate fees.
- 6). Make copies of your approval letter or certificate for your records. Display your CEU certificate of approval in your training location or be ready to present it if asked by attendees. If you offer online training, post an electronic copy of your approval certification on your website so interested social workers know your status as an approved CEU provider. Resubmit your applications annually or by cycles as required by your state to keep your CEU provider status from lapsing.
