Established:

The Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona was established in 1974, and is the only art museum in Prescott.

The Museum is devoted to art of the American West and includes "paintings, etchings, drawings, bronze sculptures, photography, American Indian artifacts and jewelry that date from the late 19th century to the early 21st century."

Temporary exhibitions are held on a quarterly basis. In addition, the Museum hosts educational programs for local schools, and special tours for various groups.


History:

The Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona was founded in 1974 with the creation of the George Phippen Memorial Foundation. George Phippen (who died in 1966) was the first President of the Cowboy Artists of America.

The Foundation supported the art of the American West and held its first exhibition at the Prescott Public Library in 1974.

Land was donated in the early 1980s to build the Phippen Museum which officially opened on October 13, 1984.

Every year during the Memorial Day Weekend, the Museum hosts the Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale at the Courthouse Plaza in Prescott.

Noteworthy Facts:

The Phippen Museum Library is home to "more than 580 books, 60 professional videos and many western art-related periodicals. In addition, the Library contains a full set of professionally bound Arizona Highways magazines from 1940 to 2005."
