Many moms are not satisfied with the level of certainty they're getting from prenatal vitamins.
One reason is that vitamins are still only vitamins, and do not really provide the cellular basics, only tools for cells to use in constructing healthy blood and bones.
Pregnancy and fish oil as a combination has come under scrutiny because of its recent popularity, even over traditional prenatal vitamin use.
There's nothing wrong with taking a prenatal vitamin.
Just the opposite is true, but hear me out.
Prenatal vitamins are absolutely useless without a diet which gives the fetus the nutrients that do the work.
In essence, many prenatal vitamin companies falsely promise what a healthy diet and exercise deliver: growth.
In order to really gain the growth necessary for a healthy child body and mind, remember that they eat what you eat, and if they need it, you must eat it every day.
For this reason many mothers are taking nutrient supplements heavy in fatty acids which are absolutely necessary for brain development.
These supplements are most convenient in the form of fish oil, and eliminate the concern of not eating enough fish.
After all, no one wants seafood poisoning while pregnant.
Don't get me wrong.
It's still important to eat well cooked fish every now and then, but fish oil supplements mean that you don't have to eat them everyday.
An effective dose of omega-3 high in the essential nutrient DHA will solve many of the fears associated with possible miscarriage or developmental disorders, including Down syndrome.
Fish oil is not a cure-all, but it is a good start.
Nothing can replace a well-rounded diet rich in iron, calcium, and especially vitamin D.
Lack of vitamin D has been linked to all sorts of prenatal problems including low birth-weight and premature birth, so be sure to take in plenty of this life saver.
Concerns There have also been a lot of concerns lately about the correct dosage for pregnant mothers and the possibility of toxins.
Here I can at least address the issue of dosage, as I believe that avoiding overdose is essential for the health of the mother and child.
Although you may not hear of many deaths related to fish oil overdose--the whole idea seems silly--it's wise to remember that many side effects can lead to trauma.
For example, brain bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke may be a direct cause of an extreme excess of omega-3.
You can be sure that calculating the correct dosage is a very big deal.
Pregnancy and fish oil do mix, but only in the right amounts.
