The Purpose

• A dehumidifier is used to remove the dampness from a room. As a side effect, a room that has been dehumidified will feel somewhat cooler because humid areas feel hotter. Most dehumidifiers are small and portable. The benefit is that you can dry out certain areas as needed. Basements can be particularly damp and can benefit from dehumidifiers. Dehumidifiers are also good for removing allergens from the air as well as creating other health benefits. Eliminating dampness can help keep mold out of your home. Excess humidity in the air can also aggravate arthritis and rheumatism. Dust mites also die when the humidity is less than 50 percent.
  
  

Location

• You can place a dehumidifier almost anywhere, as long as you avoid certain problems. You should keep the appliance several feet away from all surrounding walls, furniture and ceilings. The outside area of the dehumidifier will also get slightly warm, so keep it away from areas that can not get warm. Be sure to plug the dehumidifier into a properly grounded outlet. Don't set up water drainage or disposal near electrical circuits or devices. Also keep the dehumidifier from sources of dirt or dust that might clog up the machine. Make sure you close doors and windows to the room that is being dehumidified to ensure efficiency.
