How to Put Up a Chain-Link Fence
- 1). Starting at the point where the fence will begin, measure the length of the first leg of the fence to mark the first corner. Drive a stake into the ground at this location. Stretch the heavy string between the starting point and the corner stake. Use this to keep your posts in a straight line.
- 2). Drive stakes along this line every 8 feet for the best resistance to wind. This will mark the spots where the posts will be set. Dig the holes 6 inches in diameter and 30 inches deep, if possible. If not possible, dig them as close to 30 inches as you can. For holes that are between 18 and 24 inches, make the hole wider at the bottom than it is at the top. This will add strength to the post.
- 3). Mix the concrete to fill the first hole. Set the post in the hole and pour the concrete around it. Set the level against the post to be certain it is plumb. Set all the posts down the first line. The concrete needs 24 hours to set before continuing.

Making a right angle corner
Tie the heavy string on the post that is closest to the corner post. Pull the string around the corner post and out from the corner at least 4 feet. Tie it to a stake but don't drive the stake into the ground yet. Mark the string between the two posts at 3 feet from the corner. Mark the string going away from the corner post at 4 feet. Move the string going away from the post so that 5 feet are between the two marks to create a triangle. Drive the stake into the ground. This will make the corner square. - 5). Pull the string the full length of the next leg of the fence. Repeat Steps 2 and 4 to set the rest of the posts.

Stretching the bottom tension wire
Start the tension wire at the starting point of the fence, securing it with a brace band. Pull it tightly between corner posts with the come a long tool. This may need adjustment once the fence material is installed. Next, install the top rails by sliding them through the post loop caps on each post. Measure and cut the rail to fit between the last length of rail and the corner posts. - 2
A look at the parts
Slip 3 brace bands on the first post of the fence. Layout the fence material for the first leg of the fence. Weave a tension bar through the fence material and stand the fence material up. Place the tension bar into the brace bands and secure it with the nuts and bolts provided with the brace bands. - 3
Brace bands
Slip 3 brace bands on the corner post of the fence. Pull the fence between the posts as tightly as you can. Weave a tension bar into the fence about half way between the last two posts. Secure the fence stretcher to the tension bar. - 4
Attach the come a long to the corner post and the stretcher bar. Pull the fence material tight. Weave a tension bar through the fence material and pull it to the corner. Secure it with the brace bands. - 5
Fence ties
Tie the fence material to the posts and rails with the ties provided. A maximum space between each tie is 24 inches.
