How to Troubleshoot a Vertical Blinds Pulley That Does Not Work

    • 1). Adjust the pulley on the blinds if the control chain is difficult to operate. Pull off the end cap on the head rail or narrow metal piece that holds blinds. Find the pulley with a metal rod in the center. Lightly tap the rod with a flat head screwdriver to loosen the push nut, which is a nut that pushes on and twists tight, to improve pulley operation. The push nut is on the end of the metal rod. Replace the end cap on the head rail.

    • 2). Pull the control chain, harder than normal, in each direction to push the vertical slats into alignment if the blinds are hard to operate. This should loosen the control chain.

    • 3). Spray silicone into the pulleys or mechanism of the vertical blinds. This should loosen and help lubricate the mechanism. The silicone spray will not damage the parts or fabrics.

    • 4). Secure the pull cord to a stationary object such as a chair or table. If the cord is tight, it will help the pulley and the blinds operate smoothly, so the cord will not get caught in the track or blind mechanism.

    • 5). Clean or dust blinds regularly with a feather duster or dusting cloth, so dirt or debris does not get caught in the slats or the blind mechanism.
