Winners of the Kentucky Derby in the Last 10 Years
The Kentucky Derby is one of the most prestigious horse races in the United States. Winning the Derby is a fantastic coup for the owner of the horse because of the attractive purse but also because the colt becomes interesting from a breeding perspective. It should be noted that breeding success is not always a given, and Derby winners have recently fallen out of favor with the market, in comparison to winners of other horse racing events.
Let's Take a Look at the Winners of the Derby in the last 10 years
Orb, 2013: Ridden by J. Rosario, trained by Claude €Shug€McGaughey, and owned by Stuart Janney and Phipps Stable, Orb won the Kentucky Derby in 2 minutes 2.89 seconds, netting his owners a $1,439,800 purse. It was McGaughey's first Derby victory.
I'll Have Another, 2012: With M. Guttierez as the jockey, I'll Have Another won the Derby in 2 minutes 10.83 seconds. He's the first horse to have ever won the Kentucky Derby starting out at post 19 and it was also Gutierrez's first Derby ride and victory.
Animal Kingdom, 2011: Ridden by John R. Velazquez, Animal Kingdom placed first in the 2011 Kentucky Derby. His time was 2 minutes 2.04 seconds. Expected to retire to a breeding farm in 2014, Animal Kingdom has run 11 races in his career of which he has had five wins and five second places, earning over $8 million.
Super Saver, 2010: Calvin Borel rode Super Saver in the 2010 Kentucky Derby, coming in first in 2 minutes 4.45 seconds. This was Borel's fourth Derby win but the first win for the trainer, Todd Pletcher, after trying 25 times. Super Saver retired later that year due to bruising and inflammation in his cannon bones.
Mine That Bird, 2009: The second gelding to win the Kentucky Derby since 1929 and one of only such horses to do so, Mine That Bird shocked the world when he won in 2009, especially since the odds were 50-to-1. Calvin Borel was the jockey and B. Woodley trained him. Mine That Bird continued to perform well in 2009, finishing in the money in the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes coming in second and third, respectively.
Big Brown, 2008: Finishing the race in 2 minutes 1.82 seconds, with K. Desormeaux as jockey, R. Dutrow as trainer and owned by IEAH Stables, Pompa et al, Big Brown seemed unstoppable after bringing home victories in two of the Triple Crown horse races in 2008. Sired by a Graded stakes race winner, Big Brown came in ninth at the Belmont Stakes due to an injury, which led to his retirement shortly thereafter.
Street Sense, 2007: Winning the Derby in 2 minutes 2.17 seconds, Street Sense's owner and breeder was James B Tafel. The horse participated in several horse racing events, emerging victorious at the Breeder's Cup Juvenile. He received the Eclipse Award in 2006.
Barbaro, 2006: Jockeyed by E. Prado, trained by M. Matz, and owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Barbaro won the Derby in 2 minutes 1.36 seconds. He entered the Derby undefeated, but, unfortunately, the Preakness Stakes would be his undoing. Shattering three bones in his right rear leg, he underwent surgery to set the bones. It wasn't long before he developed laminitis in his other three legs. The owners decided to euthanize him since his suffering would have been too great.
Giacomo, 2005: Like Mine That Bird, Giacomo was a longshot to win the Derby in 2005 with odds of 50 to 1, yet he surprised everyone when he came in first after 2 minutes 2.75 seconds. He was jockeyed by Mike Smith, trained by John Shirreffs and owned by Jerome Moss. Participating in quite a few horse races, Giacomo retired in 2006 and is happily living in Kentucky.
Smarty Jones, 2004: Won the Kentucky Derby in 2 minutes 4.06 seconds. Jockeyed by S. Elliott, Smarty Jones was the first unbeaten winner of the Derby since 1977. The jockey was S. Elliott, trainer J. Servis and owner Someday Farm. He is descended from a number of Graded stakes race winners and related to many Triple Crown winners.
