Risks of Egg Donation
- Short-term side effects of fertility drugs used to promote numerous eggs may include moodiness, bloating, cramps and weight gain or loss. Long-term psychological effects may include anxiety of how a family is raising the donor's offspring.
- Hyper-stimulation of the ovaries increase the donor's chance of becoming pregnant while on the drugs and may even cause enough pain or discomfort that a donor will need to be hospitalized.
- If a child is born with your eggs, your file will remain in the records. Currently, laws prohibit a child from contacting a donor, but there is no guarantee that it will not change in the future.
- Egg donation requires a commitment to extensive medical procedures that mandate a refrain from smoking, drugs, alcohol, prescription drugs (including birth control) and sexual intercourse.
- Research from the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, a group of leaders in the fields of law, medicine, nursing, ethics and philosophy, has found that most donors are not fully informed or educated about the potential risks.
