How to Clean Products for Smoke Damage
- 1). Read the fabric care label to determine the warmest water and type of bleach (if recommended) that can safely be used to clean the item.
- 2). Apply a fabric stain remover to stains.
- 3). Machine wash or hand wash according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 4). Use a sponge to apply rubbing alcohol to stubborn smoke stains and wash the item again.
- 1). Vacuum the upholstery.
- 2). Apply upholstery cleaner according to the cleaning product's instructions.
- 3). Use a clean cloth to blot the area, absorbing as much of the cleaner as possible.
- 4). Allow the upholstery to air dry.
- 1). Vacuum the carpet.
- 2). Apply a carpet stain remover to stains.
- 3). Clean the carpet using a steam cleaner. Either rent a steam cleaner or use a household model.
- 4). Allow the carpet to dry completely before walking on it.
- 5). Sprinkle baking soda on carpets to absorb lingering odors. Allow it to sit overnight (longer for persistent smoke odor). Vacuum the carpet.
