    Drapes and Curtains

    • 1). Read the fabric care label to determine the warmest water and type of bleach (if recommended) that can safely be used to clean the item.

    • 2). Apply a fabric stain remover to stains.

    • 3). Machine wash or hand wash according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4). Use a sponge to apply rubbing alcohol to stubborn smoke stains and wash the item again.

    Upholstered Furniture

    • 1). Vacuum the upholstery.

    • 2). Apply upholstery cleaner according to the cleaning product's instructions.

    • 3). Use a clean cloth to blot the area, absorbing as much of the cleaner as possible.

    • 4). Allow the upholstery to air dry.

    Carpet and Rugs

    • 1). Vacuum the carpet.

    • 2). Apply a carpet stain remover to stains.

    • 3). Clean the carpet using a steam cleaner. Either rent a steam cleaner or use a household model.

    • 4). Allow the carpet to dry completely before walking on it.

    • 5). Sprinkle baking soda on carpets to absorb lingering odors. Allow it to sit overnight (longer for persistent smoke odor). Vacuum the carpet.

    Other Household Products

    • 1). Clean the exterior of appliances using soapy water and allow to air dry.

    • 2). Wipe moldings, light switches, ceiling fans, fixtures, lamps, picture frames, shelves and windows with diluted vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water).

    • 3). Wipe wood surfaces with a damp cloth.
