How to Remove a Fiberglass Shower Base
- 1). Insert the end of a turkey baster into the open drain. Pump the bulb of the baster to remove water from the shower trap. Place the water into a plastic bucket.
- 2). Place a rag in the cleared drain to keep sewer gases from entering your home and to keep debris from falling into the open drain.
- 3). Score the area where the flooring meets the side of the shower pan with a utility knife.
- 4). Drill around the rubber mounting flange connecting the shower pan to the drainpipe with a 1/16-inch drill bit secured in the chuck of a 3/8-inch drill motor. Do not drill deeper than 1 inch into the rubber mounting flange to avoid damaging the subfloor.
- 5). Cut around the drilled mounting flange with a utility knife to remove the top of the flange.
- 6). Remove the drilling debris from the fiberglass shower pan with a wet/dry vacuum. Pull the rag from the shower drain.
- 7). Remove the hold-down clamps holding the shower pan to the studs with a Phillips screwdriver, if needed.
- 8). Hold the end of the screwdriver onto the end of the shower drainpipe. Slide the end of the pry bar under the area where the side of the shower pan meets the floor material. Push down on the end of the pry bar to separate the shower pan from the floor.
- 9). Lift gently on the edges of the fiberglass shower pan to remove the pan from the shower recess.
