How to Install Fluorescent Lights on Dimmer Switches
- 1). Understand that not all fluorescent lights will operate on all dimmer switches. Because fluorescent lamps operate differently than incandescent ones, older fluorescent models cannot accept their voltage being reduced. Instead, a new bulb or light fixture will need to be used that has the proper ballast already built-in.
- 2). Turn the dimmer switch all the way off. Remove the existing incandescent bulb from the fixture by unscrewing it from its base. Note its wattage and its size. The fluorescent bulb that you choose to replace this with must match, and fit into, that fixture. Most lights for the home use an A-19 style bulb, with a medium size base. They consume, on average, between 20 and 100 watts.
- 3). Obtain a fluorescent bulb to replace the incandescent. The new bulb must be rated "dimmable," and should be clearly marked as such on its packaging or product description. You can find these bulbs at your local hardware or home-improvement store, or online.
- 4). Screw the new, dimmable fluorescent bulb in to the fixture. Test the new light by turning the dimmer all the way on, allowing the bulb to warm up fully, and then turning the dimmer down by degrees. If the light flickers or cycles on and off, the bulb is not dimmable. Otherwise, enjoy your new, more energy-efficient light!
