Good dental hygiene is important to ensure teeth hygiene and healthy gums.
To ensure your teeth stay healthy the most important thing you can do is to get into a routine of at least twice daily flossing and brushing.
Most oral problems stem from plaque.
Plaque forms on the outer side of your teeth and forms a sticky layer of bacteria formed from bits of food that forms on the teeth.
Plaque contains bacteria which creates an acid that causes cavities in the teeth.
Plaque quickly grows and also leads to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.
Once you get gum disease this can become quite serious as infection spreads quickly and can damage healthy tissue around your teeth as well as destroy your teeth.
The best prevention method is to remove the dreaded plaque before it actually has a chance to build up and cause serious problems.
Regular brushing will remove plaque that has built up on the larger surfaces of the teeth as well as from underneath the gums.
Regular flossing will remove all the plaque that lurks between the teeth.
What causes Plaque? Most food that is eaten causes bacteria to form in the mouth.
Sugary foods including biscuits and sweets are not the only culprits to cause plaque.
Starchy foods such as bread and cereal also cause acids to form.
Snacking often means all day long you are prone to acid attacks.
If these acid attacks are constant your teeth can decay.
As well as causing damage to the teeth plaque also produces substances that irritate the gums.
These irritants make the gums red in colour and cause them to bleed easily.
If this continues after a period of time the gums may pull away from the teeth.
Pockets will form and fill with more bacteria as well as pus.
If the gums go untreated, the bone around the teeth can be destroyed and the teeth can become loose or even worse have to be removed.
Today, gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss in adults.
Eating a balanced and varied diet and cutting back on snack food can prevent gum disease from occurring.
If you like to snack then rather than choose sugary snacky food, opt for nutritious snacks such as plain yoghurt, fruit or vegetables.
Tips for an oral care routine Brushing and cleaning between teeth everyday is the best way to remove decay causing plaque.
Regular brushing will remove the plaque from the tooth surfaces.
Always choose a soft bristled brush which easily fits the shape of your mouth enabling you to easily reach all areas.
Always brush using a toothpaste that contains fluoride as this protects your teeth from decay.
Cleaning between the teeth once a day with floss removes plaque from between the teeth, areas where the toothbrush can't reach.
It is essential in preventing periodontal (gum) disease.
By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet and regularly visiting your dentist, you can have a perfect set of healthy teeth for the rest of your life.
