How to Carve a Foam Pumpkin
- 1). Cut a hole in the lower back of the pumpkin large enough to accommodate your light fixture, using a craft knife. Electric building light cords, used to light holiday village houses, work well because they do not give off enough heat to burn the foam. Measure the diameter of the light bulb and draw a circle on the pumpkin to accommodate the size. Press the knife through the pumpkin, and drag the blade slowly to cut the round opening.
- 2). Place your pumpkin stencil over the front of the pumpkin and tape the four corners of the stencil to the pumpkin.
- 3). Transfer the pattern on the stencil onto the pumpkin using a pushpin. Poke holes, about every 1/8 inch, through the stencil and into the pumpkin. Remove the stencil from the pumpkin.
- 4). Cut the design out of the pumpkin using the craft knife. Refer to your design on the stencil when working. Press the knife through the pumpkin, and drag the blade through using a slow sawing motion, following the dot pattern. Cut small areas of the design first. Then cut larger areas, cutting out one section at a time and removing it.
- 5). Insert the light cord through the bottom of the pumpkin, plug it in and light it.
