The Nightmare You Need Not Fear If Paramedics Are Truly Prepared

103 10
You awaken from a sound sleep and the one nightmare you hope to never experience is now happening.
Your chest feels like an elephant is sitting on it, you can not catch your breath and your left arm feels as if it is asleep.
Even though it is a cool night, your bed is damp from your sweat.
You waken your spouse, who then voices what you fear but have refused to admit, a heart attack.
Your spouse calls 911 and as the emergency units are dispatched, your mind begins to wonder, will the paramedics have the knowledge, equipment and skills to save you? You have read articles and seen news reports on the extensive training paramedics receive before they are even certified and the on-going training they receive throughout the year to keep them up to date on the latest techniques and medical discoveries.
When the paramedics arrive in the newest, fully equipped ambulance available, both you and your spouse begin to relax a little.
But one of the least thought of and given the least amount of attention to is the equipment a paramedic is using to do his/her life saving job.
Is his or her stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, watch and penlight top of the line too? These are the instruments that the paramedics use most often to get your vitals which are then relayed to the emergency room staff.
If the paramedic does not have the latest, best quality medical instrument, how accurate will this important information be? All medically trained people should be using our high quality medical instruments which are available to everyone interested in using only the best.
