With over 100 unique attractions at your fingertips, York is one of the best-kept secrets of the United Kingdom. There's something for everyone in York, if you're young or old and on any size of budget. Whether it be vising to soak up the local heritage, enjoy the scenery or just have some fun, there isn't really very much you can't do in this beautiful city.

With centuries of history to its name and nothing but acres of Yorkshire countryside surrounding the main city, York is quickly becoming one of the most desired places to visit in the north of England. This guide is designed to let you know a little more about what to do in this wonderful city, with some of the main attractions featured as well as and a comprehensive list of the best York hotels.

 

Keeping Busy


If you're arriving by train then you may want to book your York city hotel closer to the city center. There are a number of beautifully presented hotels in York including grade I and grade II listed buildings. From the train station you can begin your heritage experience with just a simple walk south down Queen St and you will find yourself at the Micklegate Bar and Bar Convent. Both of these buildings are centuries old and during the season can be viewed for free. After visiting these sights or if you want to get straight to the heart of the action, take a trip to the other side of the River Ouse and you will be taken back in time many hundreds of years. Just off the north junction on Tower St you will the York Castle Museum. Made famous for originally being the prison in which Dick Turpin spent his last days, it is also famous for its authenticity, and of giving the explorer the real feeling that they are back in Victorian times when visiting the Victorian exhibit.

Further down Tower St and through the city center you can experience Fairfax House, a small exhibit but worth going to, the mighty JORVIK Viking Centre; with one of the largest collections of Viking artifacts in the UK and fully interactive museum experience, this exhibition is designed for all ages and should not be missed. If you are travelling with children then visit St Saviour Gate for the DIG – An Archeological Adventure attraction too; there's also plenty to keep the grown-ups happy too.

If however you're looking for a more laid back and relaxed holiday then there are a number of National Parks surrounding Yorkshire; hotels are also scattered around the edges of these parks so be sure to check out the "York Hotels Explained" section of this guide for more information on hotels in Yorkshire.

About a 30 minute drive north east of the city, you have the world renowned Yorkshire Moors; famous for the astonishing beauty, a trek across the Moors is a must for any walks fan. If you don't mind driving a little further then around an hour's drive northwest will take you to the equally impressive Yorkshire Dales; another beautiful walk.

 

York Hotels Explained


There are a number of fantastic hotels in York, prices do vary but there is definite quality in every price range. If you are deciding to stay with the main city of York then here are a few hotels to consider:

York City Hotels


Just around the corner from the railway station on Station Rise is the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa; very well presented with a late Victorian style, this hotel offers a wide range of relaxation options from its in-built spa facility. These include Massages, facials, body treatments, manicure, pedicures and many other beauty and health treatments. They have a very well equipped leisure facilities and swimming pool. Spa treatments come at an additional cost so you will have to book those in advance but the gym and pool are included in the price, which starts from £139 per room.

This York hotel is at the top-end of the budget but definitely worth a look if you're only taking a weekend break.

Scaling down in price from that hotel you have:

Waterfront Hotel; situated idyllically by the River Ouse this grade II listed building serves fantastic seafood and steak. Rooms start from £120.

The judges Lodges; a grade I listed Georgian building with Jacuzzi and Cellar bar facilities. Prices start from £79 for a single and £95 for a standard.

Hotel 53; opposite the York Castle Museum, this hotel has very well presented modern styled rooms and a great restaurant. Prices start at around £70

The Queens Hotel; situated almost opposite the Waterfront hotel on the opposite side of the river, this York hotel has nice traditional features and benefits from a great view of the river. Prices here start at £64.

 

Yorkshire Hotels


If however you're not looking to stay so close to the city center there are a number of great retreat hotels that can be found near the national parks; for the Moors:

The Black Swan Hotel; at around 25 miles northeast from the city center and on the edge of the moors, this Yorkshire hotel is both cosy and luxurious. The restaurant has 2 AA rosettes and rooms are styled beautifully. Prices here start at around £161

The Feversham Arms Hotel; situated next almost next to the Black Swan, this hotel oozes luxury. With exquisitely presented rooms, great food and spa facilities this is one of the best hotels in Yorkshire. Rooms here start at around £150.

Hackness Grange; this hotel really is one of the hidden gems of Yorkshire. Set many acres of land this Georgian manor house boasts traditional style rooms and restaurants and offers outdoor leisure facilities including a tennis court and pitch and put golf course. This hotel is special because prices begin at a mere £70 per room, which for what you get is an absolute steal.

For the Dales:


The Traddock Hotel; at around an hour's drive from Bradford. This Yorkshire hotel is set in a traditional Georgian house and has an equally traditional feel. The restaurant has been awarded 2 AA rosettes and the grounds are set on a picturesque backdrop. Prices start at £109

Grassington House Hotel; Around an hour's drive from Bradford this large three-storey Georgian house has been modernized to a very high standard with all of the luxury rooms in keeping with the modern look. No. 5 is the Yorkshire hotel's award winning restaurant that offers and A La Carte menu as well as traditional and Sunday lunch offerings. Prices start at £100 per room.

The Red Lion Hotel & manor house; a 50 minute drive from Bradford this well turned out hotel is part of a local public house which offers a great selection of high quality traditional English food. Rooms start at £70.
