How serious is cancer? In the USA alone, it's the second leading causing of death and isn't far behind heart disease. While cancer has become a worldwide epidemic, researchers continue to learn more about this powerful disease. In fact, by taking some basic steps you can help to reduce your risk of acquiring cancer. Here's some advice to do that:

1. Limit your exposure to the sun.

While the sun can serve as a rich supply of Vitamin E, use caution exposing your skin to the sun. In fact, scientific studies show that sun exposure is the top cause of skin cancer. If you go outdoors, then apply a coat of sunscreen with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15. Also, wear clothing such as broad-rimmed hats, which will further protect your skin. And finally, whenever possible stay indoors between 10 AM to 4 PM, when UV rays are the strongest.

2. Get screened regularly.

The key to treating cancer effectively is to detect it early. That's why you should get periodic cancer screening at least once annually. This is particularly true if you're in a high-risk group for particular types of cancers. Screening is quick and easy, but it could literally save your life. Also, if you notice your body undergoing any drastic changes, then you should consult your doctor immediately. Too often in life we shrug off such changes, assuming that they'll vanish with time. Sometimes they don't.

3. Exercise regularly.

While we often complain that modern life has made us too busy to exercise, a lack of it can result in several unwanted results-including cancer. In particular, obesity can increase your chance of acquiring certain varieties of cancer. You don't necessarily need to run a marathon or complete a triathlon. Instead, simply doing a daily 30-minute cardio workout can help to maintain a healthy blood pressure, increase the flow of oxygen throughout your body, and burn unwanted calories and fat. Preventing cancer should be enough motivation to hit the gym on a regular basis,

4. Stop smoking.

Smoking and secondhand smoking are some of the top causes of lung cancer. Besides increasing your chance of cancer, smoking can also cause teeth and gum problems. While putting out your last cigarette can be tough, prolonging your life is definitely a result that makes it worthwhile.

5. Eat nutritious food.

Clinical studies have proven that eating a healthy, balanced diet can significantly reduce your risk of acquiring cancer. Remember to follow the "food pyramid" that you learned as a youngster. Most of us aren't eating foods that supply a proper amount of daily required nutrients. Also, avoid foods that are high in salt, fat, and sugar. And minimize or eliminate prepared and processed foods from your diet. Such foods contain a list of Frankenstein-type manmade ingredients-many of which could increase your risk of becoming a victim of cancer.

While cancer has become a worldwide epidemic, you can fight back by taking steps to prevent and detect it quickly. Following these tips won't just make your days more convenient-it could be a lifesaver!
