Not all of us are lucky to get new pets from certified breeders.
Thus, pet ownership entails a little bit of know-how in keeping your beloved pet healthy and happy.
Most may say pets should be allowed to roam around the house and be pets.
If we let this happen, they will go whenever and wherever they want.
Not only is it unsafe but it may also keep visitors from wanting to stay in your place because of smelly cushions and dirty floors, etc.
There is, however, an art in caring for a pet that can be truly beneficial not only to him but also to the pet owner.
Teaching your pet cat how to use the litter pan for instance will save you a lot of time and energy keeping the house tidy and welcoming to guests.
There are a lot of litter pan sizes and shapes available in the market these days and more often we get overwhelmed by what to buy and which would be effective for your cat.
Just remember that your pet needs a simple box or tray that would give him ample space to move around in.
Once you have chosen a suitable litter pan, you can fill it with the right amount of cat litter.
At first, you will notice your pet is hesitant to use the box but if you guide him gently, he is sure to get the idea and then give it a try.
You can help him out by slowly holding his leg while letting his paw scratch the surface of the litter.
His natural instinct is to dig through the ground whenever he wants to go.
If and when your pet is successful in his first attempt, shower him with an ample amount of praise.
But if he ends up not using the litter box yet, do not punish him.
You ought to give him time to adjust and get used to the idea of using a litter pan.
You may wash the litter box at least once a week with soap and warm water.
In doing so, please refrain from flushing used litter in the toilet as it will cause drainage problems in the future.
Simply put it in a plastic bag and dispose of properly.
Remember to let the pan dry first before putting a fresh batch of cat litter to avoid clumping prior to its use.
Also, keep the area where the litter box is placed clean and odor free by disinfecting and mopping it regularly.
