How to Attach Roof Boots
- 1). Position a ladder against the side of the house closest to the roof vent to which you want to attach one roof boot. Climb the ladder, and approach the roof vent carefully.
- 2). Slide a pry bar beneath the shingles immediately surrounding the top and sides of the vent. Lift the pry bar away from your body to free the shingles from the roof. Use the pry bar to free nails holding down the shingles. Carefully set the shingles aside.
- 3). Fit the roof boot over the highest part of the vent. Push the boot down until it reaches the roof. Ensure that the roof boot's top end contacts the vent pipe and that the roof boot's bottom end contacts the shingles.
- 4). Attach the roof boot to the roof using a hammer and galvanized nails. Reposition the removed shingles around the sides of the vent pipe. Hammer the shingles to the roof with roofing nails.
- 5). Apply a bead of caulk across the top part of the roof boot where it contacts the vent pipe. The caulk will create a watertight seal, preventing rainwater from entering the top and sides of the pipe and leaking through the roof.
