How to Seal PVC Pipe Against Gravity
- 1). Mark the PVC pipe at the point where the joint needs to be installed, using a black marker. Cut through the pipe at the mark, using a handsaw, or, if room permits, use a power saw or powered miter saw to create a cleaner cut. Make a straight cut so it will fit easily into the coupling and scrape away any burrs using a utility knife.
- 2). Apply PVC primer around the outside of the pipe end and the inside of a PVC coupling. Wait 20 seconds for the primer to dry.
- 3). Apply PVC cement to the primed pipe end and one inside end of the coupling. Quickly push the coupling onto the end of the pipe. Hold in place for 20 seconds, allowing the cement to dry.
- 4). Prime the end of a new piece of PVC pipe and wait 20 seconds for it to dry. Apply PVC cement to the primed pipe end, and the remaining inside end of the coupling. Push the pipe end into the coupling, holding it in place for 20 seconds. Install the rest of the PVC pipe and joints following the same process.
- 5). Apply bracing to the PVC pipeline at 6-foot intervals by screwing the bracing to a stud or joist on one side of the pipeline, wrapping it once around the pipe and then screwing the bracing to stud/joist on the other side of the pipeline. Use 1-5/8 inch galvanized screws to attach the bracing and cut the bracing with metal cutters.
