How to Reduce Wheezing

    • 1). Take your prescribed oral medication as directed. Theophylline, a once-a-day pill, reduces asthma attacks and relaxes the muscles around your airways, according to the Mayo Clinic. The airways swell during an asthma attack, limiting your ability to breathe and is life threatening if immediate steps are not taken to open the airways.

    • 2). Use an inhaler when wheezing starts. Inhalers, also known as bronchodilators, send medication directly to your airways for fast relief of asthma symptoms. The medication relaxes the airways and is used to treat asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

    • 3). Keep your windows shut on warm, windy days. While the breeze ventilates your home, it also brings in allergens that can trigger an asthma attack. Turn on your air conditioner or use a portable fan to reduce spreading allergens through the air.

    • 4). Wear a face mask while cleaning to avoid inhaling dust, which is a common asthma trigger. Reduce allergens with weekly cleaning, as inhaled allergens irritates the airway and result in wheezing. Vacuuming is preferred over dusting, as dusting only moves dust and allergens around.

    • 5). Remove humidity from your home with a dehumidifier. Humidity in your home increases the likelihood of a dust mite infestation, which irritates the airways and causes wheezing.
