Function

• Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of adrenaline or epinephrine. Blocking adrenaline allows the heart to beat with reduced force and at a slower pace. These medications may also help to open up blood vessels so that blood care flow more easily.
  
  

Types

• Some beta blockers only affect your heart while others affect both the heart and the blood vessels. Commonly used beta blockers include Toprol XL, Bystolic, Sectral, Tenormin, Zebeta, Coreg, Corguard and Inderal LA.
  
  

Uses

• Beta blockers may be prescribed to treat the following conditions: hypertension, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, angina, heart attack, hypothyroidism, glaucoma, migraines, tremors and anxiety.
  
  

Side Effects

• Side effects associated with taking beta blockers may include dizziness, cold hands, fatigue and weakness. Some people may also experience difficulty breathing, insomnia, low sex drive and depression while taking beta blockers.
  
  

Considerations

• According to the Mayo Clinic, beta blockers are sometimes not as effective for African races. Also, beta blockers are not recommended for individuals with asthma because they may trigger asthma attacks.
