How to Install Seymour Duncan SH-6N Pickups
- 1). Place the guitar face up on a flat, secure work surface such as a table.
- 2). Remove the strings from the guitar.
- 3). Remove the pick guard, taking care not to break any wiring connections. Turn the pick guard over and place it on the work surface.
- 4). De-solder the original pickup’s wires from the controls. Record where they were connected by drawing a diagram or taking a digital photograph.
- 5). Remove the height adjustment screws and springs on the original pickup and remove the pickup from the mounting hole.
- 6). Place the Seymour Duncan SH-6N into the pick guard's mounting hole.
- 7). Apply a small amount of solder to the ends of the wires from the SH-6N. Solder the wires into the proper position shown in the wiring diagram supplied with the pickup and the hand-drawn placement diagram or digital photograph.
- 8). Secure the pickup to the pick guard with the mounting screws and springs. Secure the pick guard back onto the face of the guitar. Replace the strings.
- 1). Remove the strings. Place the instrument face down on a flat, secure work surface and remove the rear control cavity cover.
- 2). De-solder the original pickup’s wires from the controls and record where they were connected by drawing a diagram or taking a digital photograph. Turn the guitar face up and place on the work surface.
Remove the mounting screws (and springs, if present) from the original pickup's mounting tabs and remove the pickup. With one hand on the pickup, first pull the cable through any holes to the control cavity. This prevents unnecessary strain on the point of the cable that attaches to the pickup. - 3). Thread the conductor cable carefully to the pickup cavity.
Place the SH-6N pickup into the pickup mounting hole. Secure the pickup to the body by attaching the mounting screws (and springs, if present) through the metal tabs on either side of the SH-6N. - 4). Apply a small amount of solder to the ends of the wires from the SH-6N. Solder the wires to the proper position shown in the wiring diagram supplied with the pickup and the hand-drawn placement diagram or digital photograph.
- 5). Replace the rear control plate and replace the strings.
- 1). If used in combination with another pickup, use a ruler to measure the height of that pickup and record this information before making any adjustments. To compensate for the reduced output due to less string excursion near the bridge, the SH-6N may need to be raised closer to the strings when used in that position.
- 2). Adjust the pickup height using the appropriate flat-head or Phillips screwdriver so that the top of the new pickup is between 1/8 and 1/16 inch from the strings when they are depressed at the highest fret on the neck.
For reference, Gibson guitars are set up at the factory to a distance of 3/32 inch on the both the bass and treble sides for the neck pickup and 1/16 inch for both the bass and treble sides for the bridge pickup. - 3). Adjust the neck pickup to match the output of the bridge pickup. To test, play at the volume setting to be used in live performance.
