Wisdom may not come without pain but wisdom-teeth sure do. Here is what you must know if you think your wisdom teeth are coming through.

Most adults suffer from the crises of wisdom tooth sooner or later in their lives, most commonly between the ages of 17 and 25. They are, as you must know, the third type of molars and are four in number.

Though most people grow at least one pair by the time they have reached their 30s, there are few lucky ones which never have to go through the excruciating pain. For what it is worth, those of us who are going through it, there are a few ways to bring down the pain, at least temporarily. But first, you must be sure it is not a false alarm and you really are experiencing wisdom teeth symptoms.

Many people confuse gum problems with coming through of wisdom teeth. Delay in diagnosis often leads to more complicated conditions. While symptoms of both concerns often overlap with each other there are some distinct signs that confirm that wisdom teeth are setting in. Ask a friend to check the area where your teeth end. If you are getting wisdom teeth then you will observe that the area is experiencing a rounded formation suggesting that the molar are pushing their way up through the gums.

Experiencing unexplained headaches, weird taste in mouth, urge to chew something tender, inability to open mouth completely are other wisdom teeth symptoms. And, even though there is no solution that promises pain free, discomfort-free coming of wisdom teeth there are a few methods to subdue the pain and help the phase pass faster.

One of the most widely practiced home remedies for relieving wisdom tooth pain is swishing mouth with warm salty water. For this you should add one full teaspoon of common salt in a warm glass of water and swish it for about 20-30 seconds then spit it off. Repeat 3-4 times twice a day.

Another effective method is icing. Take an ice bag and wrap it in a thin hand towel. Place it on the lower chin area closest to the exterior of the wisdom tooth. Icing helps in reducing inflammation of gums by numbing the nerve cells. If you feel the urge to touch the area or roll the tip of the tongue try chewing gum. Chewing gum provides gentle massage to the area which will help you take your mind away from the pain for a while. There are a few OTC ointments and pain killers available to help smooth aching tooth.

Taking necessary measures to reduce pain is as important as making sure that there is no infection. Some people practice tolerance towards pain and keep carrying on with it for weeks while others prefer to remove it. The wisdom teeth removal recovery time could vary, depending on how deep the roots of the teeth were. True, wisdom teeth are slow to come. They are bound to cause pain and make you uncomfortable. But sometimes, the ache could be caused by other reasons- infection or an impacted wisdom tooth. Reddening of the area, development of pus over the gums, a sore lymph gland and fever characterize infection during wisdom teeth. On the other hand, signs of impacted wisdom tooth cover bleeding gums, jaw stiffness, swelling of gums in the area that they pain when touched.
