Pharmacist Careers
Where can I find information on different career opportunities for new pharmacists? What types of settings do pharmacists practice in?

The best place to find summaries on different career options is the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Web site. The address is: http://www.aacp.org/site/page.asp?VID=1&CID=920&DID=5747&TrackID. This page provides good information itself and can link you to the Pfizer Guide to Careers in Pharmacy, another useful resource.

As the Web site states, "While the majority of pharmacists work in community pharmacies, there is an unprecedented demand for pharmacists in a wide variety of occupational settings."

Pharmacists can work with our seniors in a variety of settings, including long-term care. Our colleagues provide dispensing, drug therapy management, and administrative services for the acutely ill in the hospital setting. Managed care needs pharmacists throughout the organization; here our colleagues work in outcomes research, drug utilization review, disease management, cost-analysis programs, and more. Pharmacists work in many aspects of industry, providing drug information to prescribers and filling supervisory and executive posts. There are opportunities working with government. Pharmacists hold staff and supervisory positions in the Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, National Science Foundation, National Library of Medicine, and the US Public Health Services. There are opportunities in academia, where faculty combines practice, research, teaching, and public service. Our professional organizations at the state and federal levels are run by pharmacists. Pharmacists also work as medical writers for much of the pharmaceutical industry and for reputable news and information services, such as WebMD.

For the majority of our profession that enters the community setting, choices include the chain pharmacy environment, which provides competitive wages and benefits and the opportunity for advancement into management roles, or opportunities in independent pharmacy, either as a staff pharmacist or owner. Independent pharmacy owners have the ability to create their own work environment and earn exceptional income. Many novel pharmaceutical care programs have been developed by independent practitioners.

With the numbers of our seniors increasing, more drugs are being dispensed. Therapy is often complex, and proper therapy requires professionals with advanced training in pharmacotherapy. It's a rewarding time to be a pharmacist.
