How to Submit an Unbound Galley for Review

    • 1). Find the names and addresses of appropriate reviewers for the book. These may be the publishers of special literary reviews, usually arranged by age or topic. Do not overlook newspapers, magazines, publications related to the subject of the book, book distributors, independent and franchise book dealers.

    • 2). Prepare two copies of the galley to submit to each reviewer or publication. If printed at home, the manuscript must be printed according to the publisher's directions and bound with tape at a copy store. Galleys prepared by the publisher should be duplicated and similarly bound. Galley prints must include the title, subject, author's name, publisher's identification, the number of pages and the ISBN number. Most reviewers will not open an unbound galley.

    • 3). Prepare a separate cover letter for each copy of the galley. This letter must repeat the information from the manuscript cover plus a description of the book, and the author's credentials and previous titles. In the letter it is important to include the name and contact numbers of the publisher and name and numbers of a publicist hired for the book. If possible, the distribution plan should be included.

    • 4). Prepare the galleys and cover letters for mailing by fitting them into a box of appropriate size. Label carefully and mail at least 3 months prior to the publication and distribution of the book. After mailing the galleys, be sure to follow up by inquiring courteously after the period of time specified by the reviewer.
