More About the Whitney Museum of American Art:
After the Metropolitan Museum of Art refused her endowment and collection, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney established the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1930 to house the collection of over 500 works of art by American artists that she had acquired beginning in 1907. After outgrowing several different locations, the museum established its current home on Madison Avenue designed by Marcel Breuer in 1966. Read more about the history of the Whitney Museum.
In 2015, the Whitney Museum will move to a new home in the Meatpacking District with 50,000 square feet of indoor gallery space and 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space.
