First opened in 1931, The Whitney is perhaps the most important museum dedicated to American art and artists. Their collection spans both twentieth century and contemporary American art, with a particular emphasis on the work of living artists. The signature Biennial exhibition showcases work created within the previous two years by invited artists, uniquely highlighting recent developments in American art.

More About the Whitney Museum of American Art:

After the Metropolitan Museum of Art refused her endowment and collection, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney established the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1930 to house the collection of over 500 works of art by American artists that she had acquired beginning in 1907. After outgrowing several different locations, the museum established its current home on Madison Avenue designed by Marcel Breuer in 1966. Read more about the history of the Whitney Museum.
