Tips on Hanging Out With a Group

    Be Flexible

    • When you hang out with a group, the chances are good that you will be more familiar and comfortable with some members than others. This can lead to complications when certain members have conflicting opinions to yours or disagree with a group's plan for the night. In order to make the group experience successful, you will need to be willing to accommodate the desires of other members of the group, even if they go against your initial plans.

    Be Friendly

    • Making time for each person in your group shows that you care about whether they are enjoying themselves and want to be as social as possible. Try not to let your group get separated into smaller cliques, as this can leave some members of the group feeling left out. Talk to every person in the group and think of yourself as the host of the night's events, constantly checking in with the crowd to keep people engaged and happy.

    Be Punctual

    • While it is true that almost every social group has one or two people who are chronically late, if you want to show respect for your group and the plans you set it is important to be on time. Showing up on time stops the group from splintering into sub-groups early, as early people grow frustrated with those who are late. It also demonstrates that the group is important to you, which is a critical key of maintaining group success.

    Be Yourself

    • When you are in a group, you may find yourself going to restaurants you do not like or tempering some of your stronger opinions to protect the feelings of others. Small compromises are a necessity in being a part of a group. However, you should never back down on things that are important to you just to stay in your group's good graces. For instance, if you are a staunch opponent of drug use, you should not feel the need to participate in the use of drugs simply because your group encourages it. Remember to keep your individuality and stay strong when you disagree with a group's behavior.
